Pertussis, also known as "chicken cough", is caused by Bordetella pertussis.
Patients may have no special symptoms at the beginning, only runny nose, sneezing, mild fever and cough. But the cough can become increasingly severe and intensified, preventing the patient from eating and breathing. Adult patients cough for an average of 5 to 12 weeks. In addition, the bacteria can infect the lungs, which can lead to convulsions and coma in severe cases.
Pertussis is a very insidious and deadly disease, the bacteria can be spread through direct contact with infected droplets.
Adult patients may be completely asymptomatic but still be at risk of spreading the bacteria.
